His Greatest Work

For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

EPHESIANS 2:10

I think sewing must skip a generation. My mother was a talented seamstress and made all my clothes as I was growing up. I expressed no interest in learning to sew—I was too busy riding my horse—but my daughter Emily asked for a sewing kit when she just a little girl. A kind neighbor provided sewing lessons, and Emily quickly proved she had inherited her grandmother’s skill.

One day, I watched her at work on a new dress. With methodical precision, she placed the pattern on the cloth she had laid out. Showing no hesitation, she cut into the cloth, and her satisfied smile told me she knew exactly what the dress was going to look like. It was wonderful to think that she could imagine and create something beautiful from pieces of paper and a pile of fabric.

I couldn’t help but reflect on the meticulous care God uses to transform the sinner who chooses to follow Christ into one of His children. We are His magnum opus, envisioned with joy and created with love.
